Interview with Dr. D. Whitney Frost, The Everett Clinic
INTERVIEWER: Why would somebody need a knee replacement, and what’s the benefit?
DR. FROST: Knee problems are universal. You know, almost nobody gets through life without tweaking their knee in one-way or another. A lot of it can be handled without an operation; it gets better on its own. Once you’ve torn something, though, you might need surgery.
There are various ligament tears, meniscus tears, dislocating kneecaps, and things like that that we can repair arthroscopically or treat arthroscopically. Some things will require more of an open procedure to fix, and then you get to the point where these knees, especially in older people, are simply worn out. The nice white shiny stuff at the end of the chicken bone is gone, and in that case you don’t need something rearranged or taken out, you need something put back on. It’s called a joint surface and that’s called a knee replacement.
So, the fastest growing group of people getting knee replacements are now people in their fifties. We’re able to do that because the procedures are more reliable and last longer. I’m now counting on all these joints we’re putting in; you know nine out of ten of them are still going to be there twenty years from now.
We have materials testing that tell us the materials now last thirty, thirty-five years with negligible wear of the plastic. It was plastic wear that was causing a lot of early failures, and loosening, and that sort of reaction. So we have a bulge coming through: the baby boomers. We’ve got a situation where younger and younger folks are getting total joints, and a lot of them are getting total joints because they’ve seen their friends get total joints and are really turned around in their activity. They’re lasting longer and people are more functional with them.
People are back out there snow skiing and water skiing. They’re riding their bikes, they’re hiking in the woods, they’re playing some tennis, they’re doing things they couldn’t do before but now they can do; and the joints are tolerating that. And you know, people aren’t becoming marathon runners with total joints, but they’re doing a whole lot of stuff with them and they’re really happy with the results.
